20 Things I've Learned In College.

  1. First impressions aren't always correct, but generally go with your gut feeling.
  2. You like someone? Tell them. The worst thing that can happen is rejection. In that case move on.
  3. Everyone is completely different from what they're like at 2pm versus 2am.
  4. Remember, the way you view someone you think you know isn't always the way they actually are.
  5. The first person you meet in college and become "friends" with probably won't be sticking around for long.
  6. You're never alone. No matter what the situation is. We're all going through feeling lonely, stressing over grades, or (almost everyone) drinking much too heavily and making bad decisions.
  7. Try something new. You might enjoy it. If you don't, at least you won't be curious about it later on in life and will know what to steer clear of.
  8. Go to Open Mic Night. It's fun and will make you feel better about yourself. If you are actually good at singing, playing an instrument, dancing, or whatever it may be, DO IT! Even if you aren't you can still have a lot of fun with it!
  9. Join clubs! It's one way of making friends! And in the process you're part of something bigger than yourself.
  10. Treat yourself to a movie or dinner. Do something you like even if you're doing it alone. Especially after a long stressful week.
  11. Go out to one college party even if it's not your scene. This way you'll never wonder what it would've been like.
  12. Call home. Talk to your parents. Talk to your sibling(s). They probably miss you more than you realize. Skype/Facetime your pets.
  13. Not everyone will care about your music, art, dancing, or other skills. But if you can find at least one person that does care about any of that, keep them in your life. It's always nice to be able to share the things you're good at with at least one other person besides your family.
  14. If you're going to bail, bail early! This works for relationships, majors, classes, school in general, jobs, anything. The earlier you bail, the easier it'll be for you and the ones around you.
  15. Learn to say no. You won't be able to say yes to every club that asks you to be a part of. You won't be able to work on other projects that people ask you to be a part of if you already have your plate full. You won't be able to please every single person around you and that's okay!
  16. Living away from home isn't always the easiest decision, but it'll help you learn. You'll be forced to learn to be responsible. You'll be forced to learn from really dumb mistakes. You'll be forced to cook for yourself if you don't live on campus, and you'll probably be really bad at it. Also, if you want to live away from home thinking it'll be better, that's not always the case. Make sure you're ready to live on your own and not running away from home problems, because you might end up in a worse situation.
  17. People suck no matter where in the world you go. There will always be someone who will make your life hell. You just gotta learn to ignore them and try your hardest in everything you do.
  18. People will doubt you. If you believe you're doing the right thing, keep doing you!
  19. Choose a major that you know you'll be happy in and you're bound to succeed.
  20. Don't give up! It will get harder as time goes on, but it will get better! You'll learn how to deal with certain things and you'll become stronger. After all, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger.
